Talking points

  1. One person, one vote is the founding promise. Anything that breaks it — gerrymandering, winner-take-all electors — breaks the promise.
  2. Gerrymandering is cheating, in plain English. Politicians draw maps to pick their voters. That’s the opposite of consent of the governed.
  3. The Electoral College ignores small states. 0 events in Wyoming, Vermont, the Dakotas, Alaska, Delaware, Rhode Island, Montana, and Idaho in 2020. Zero.
  4. A national popular vote creates 65 million voters. Republicans in California. Democrats in Wyoming. Everyone whose vote is currently thrown away.
  5. The Compact is constitutional. Article II, Section 1 lets every state decide how to award its electors. The Founders left this door open on purpose.
  6. It’s 76% of the way there. 17 states + DC = 209 electoral votes. We need 61 more.

Today, citizens across the country are joining the call for one of the most American ideas ever written: one person, one vote. The current system — gerrymandered House districts and a winner-take-all Electoral College — cancels the votes of tens of millions of Americans each presidential cycle and rewards politicians who draw maps to silence their own constituents. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement already adopted by more than a dozen states and the District of Columbia, would guarantee the presidency to whoever wins the most votes nationwide. It is constitutional, it requires no amendment, and it is most of the way to taking effect. A true patriot believes every American counts the same. The Compact makes that belief real.
